Turkeys get some abuse too

Even though thanksgiving was just a few days ago many people were at home sharing food with their family but completely forgot about where their meat came from. Of course for thanksgiving we all eat either turkey or some other form of meat but no one really wonders where their turkey comes from. Just like chickens and other farm animals, turkeys also get the same harsh treatment. I have added a link here to show some of the abuses these animals go through. I bet if some people were more aware of what happens to these turkeys then they will probably not be as much into eating them. I personally thought that turkeys were actually the only well treated animals due to the fact that they are mostly eaten on a special holiday.

Talk about a corny diet

Just as much as all of the farm animals are abused the animal far greater abused more than others would be chickens. Their whole lives are controlled from top to bottom from the point they are born to the point where they die at a slaughterhouse that is probably miles away. Chickens, unfortunately, don't even get to eat as much as they want from their food. Since the amount of food they eat daily greatly affects their ability to lay eggs then farmers control the portions they eat. Farmers sometimes starve their chickens for days so that they can make more eggs. The way this works is that the proportion of the weight and height of the chicken has to be a certain weight in order to constantly produce eggs, somewhat like cholesterol whereas if the chicken is fat then the efficiency drastically decreases.




Who would have ever thought their life would depend on something so corny?

Mom I smell grapes... Apples?

Coming across what seemed an endless amount of different items at my job I came across this:




I immediately began to think about what this could possibly be, so I went ahead and approached the item in order to see what  it was and guess what I laid eyes on. I first read grape and was mislead by the purple carton and red writing. After I had seen an apple inside the see through package the only question which ran through my mind was Okay, So what is this?. Curiosity led me to take action and buy a grapple. At first glance it looked like a regular apple and I couldn't even begin to imagine why it was called a grapple. Only after I unsnapped the plastic seal, that I began smelling the fragrance of grapes. It all rushed back to me and then my question, of why the product was named grapples, was answered. It was an apple that tasted like a grape. It smelled like handful of sweet grapes that had been crushed right in front of me. As I took my first bite I realized it tasted nothing like an apple but more like a grape. 


From there on many things became clear to me. The main one was that technology was getting absurd and ideas that some people have all really weird. Here I was thinking that I was going for an apple until I took a bite and it tasted like grape juice. It only raises many more questions about how far genetically engineered can go. 
   

Response of Schlosser's fast food nation 1.2

Reading the second chapter of Schlosser's fast food nation i came to realize many historical between business giants that I could have never imagined happening. The book describes how Ray Kroc and the creator of Disney world, Walt Disney had many competitive issues. At first McDonald's started out like any other old regular hamburger place and slowly got recognized by many people and even went as far to attract the president of the United States. Many marketing plans were put to the test in order to attract more customers ie: the happy meal. McDonald's basically tried to bring in more customers by targeting children because if they attracted a kid their parents would buy their food and there would also be two extra customers. Children also tend to nag their parents about something they want until they get it and this is the case for McDonald's because their ad campaigns were solely focused for the attraction of kids as customers which is something that goes on today on a much larger scale. Also by making different contracts with different companies fast food places are able to promote their products in a more enticing way and one example would be a tamagotchi toy which at a certain time was included in a happy meal toy.

Menus in restaurants

I was reading through the paper and came across this article, which said that new laws are requiring restaurants to post nutrition on their menus. Also vending machines are being taken out of public schools something which I wasn't informed of. At the end I have posted a URL where this article can be viewed online. I think this will affect many restaurants like McDonalds because in all reality if their food is really greasy then they will have a really tough time portraying to their consumers that the food isn't as fattening.

McDonald's got a diet?

As I was going around reading stuff through the paper on my greatly boring day I came across a very unusual article. The biggest fast food chain in the world has decided to target a new kind of customers. Surprisingly an animal which some people consider pests. McDonald's has decided to go after none other than the Pogonomyrmex badius ant.

This was just a small picture i was able to find online that shows the colony of ants basically being led to the food. I could only imagine the dangers that this "diet" has on the small little guys judging from the long term impact they have on us.

Those must be some good fries :D.
